Abstract

This article studies the political policing displayed by the Dirección General de Investigaciones, Identificación y Pasaportes since the arrival of the Popular Front to power until the death of the President Pedro Aguirre Cerda, moment in wich this coalition was already crumbled. We will put our attention in how this police operated with left and center parties in power and wich changes was introduced in this institution, on one hand, and wich elements, expected or not, remained in years where social and political conflicts (strikes, plots) were not absent. We will see how the civil police worked between the demand to protect order and at the same time to mark a clear cessation of a trajectory marked by illegal acts and a constant run over to rights and freedoms of opponents.
