Abstract

The events of the last decade have shown that globalization has diminished the phenomenon of the borders of the "nation-state", weakening the capacities of discretionary action of national authorities, as well as of monopolies or internal social groups. Although there is broad convergence regarding the need to face the new reality through progress in the institutional order, the role that the regional level would play does not focus attention. These features illustrate one of the contradictions of globalization: the contrast between the world aspects of the economic field and economic governance, which is generally limited to the national framework. This paper shows that regional integration constitutes a potential lever for Latin America to achieve these institutional advances at a lower cost, which are essential to adapt the governance of national economies to globalization and allow them to take advantage of it.
