Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to present and discuss, on the basis of a brief economic and socialterritorial panorama, the main factors that led to the recent transformation undergone by the Cacaueira da Bahia Region (Ilhéus-Itabuna Microregion) and its implications for the organization of the regional space. In order for the main objective proposed to be achieved, bibliographic and documentary studies on the subject (articles and books printed or published on the Internet) were carried out. In addition, secondary data surveys of socio-economic nature of the micro-region were conducted in conjunction with government planning institutions, using techniques of indirect documentation and mapping available on site (map of population distribution by municipality according to the 2010 census). The bibliographic and documentary surveys made it possible to establish the basis of the article in the discussion of the results. The secondary data, processed and represented by means of tables and graphs and the cartographic document raised, reinforced the results of the research and the analyses made. It is evident that in the last decades this region (micro-region) has undergone substantial transformations both in the economic sphere and in the social and territorial sphere, greatly influenced by its last and most serious crisis in what for decades was its main economic activity: cocoa farming. These transformations, however, were not only due to this factor, but were also influenced by changes taking place in the national as well as in the international scenarios, promoted by the process of globalization of the capitalist economy.
